Dr. Bruno GĂ©rard, a Belgian national, is Professor and Agrobiosciences lead at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P, Morocco) since September 2021.
He earned a master’s degree in agricultural engineering from the University Catholique de Louvain (1986), a master’s degree in irrigation engineering from the Utah State University (1990), and a PhD in agronomy from the University of Hohenheim in 2000.
Bruno has a long acquaintance with CGIAR. From 1991 to 2008, he worked at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) based in Niger, first as a research station manager and then as a scientist leading agronomy projects in the region, with a special focus on soil fertility and risk management. In 2008, he joined the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Ethiopia as a coordinator of the system-wide livestock program, an initiative enhancing collaborations between CGIAR centers for integrated research on smallholder crop-livestock systems. He joined CIMMYT in 2011 and for 10 years led a team of international scientists working in maize and wheat-based systems in Africa, Asia and Latin America. With research and development partners, his program developed, validated and scaled agronomy practices and technologies aiming at increasing productivity, profitability, resilience and stability of farming systems while preserving the environment.
